Day of the Dead at the Jawbone

Honoring the Day of the Dead with a Cultural and Culinary Celebration

The Jawbone on Main Street in White Sulphur Springs has seen immense success in 2024 and is looking to continue its prosperity into the fall. Known for its chic atmosphere and unique menu, the self-proclaimed “cocktail lounge and eatery” provides gourmet cuisine to the county, making it well-liked amongst locals and popular with visitors. This fall, the Jawbone will continue its series of hosting distinctive events with a Day of the Dead Cocktail Party.

While October is known for its spooky themes and traditions, the Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) is a vibrant Mexican holiday celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, honoring deceased loved ones through joyful remembrance. Families create altars (ofrendas) adorned with photos, favorite foods, marigolds, and sugar skulls to guide the spirits back. Special bread, Pan de Muerto, is also prepared. With roots in indigenous traditions and Catholicism, this celebration emphasizes the joy of life and memory rather than mourning, making it a unique cultural event that has gained recognition worldwide.

To celebrate this distinctive cultural tradition, the Jawbone will host its Day of the Dead Cocktail Party on November 2nd at 9 PM. The event is set to be a celebration of life’s joys, including delicious food and drink alongside music and dancing. Attendees are also encouraged to show up in their finest costumes, with a $100 gift card awarded to the individual with the best costume. The party does have a cost of $25 per person, and complimentary drinks and appetizers will be given upon entry.

In true Day of the Dead fashion, the cocktail party, while a lighthearted and fun event, also serves as an opportunity to pay tribute to those the community has lost. All individuals attending are requested to bring photos and items to contribute to the Community Ofrenda (altar). This communal space allows for the honoring of life in a meaningful way.

All in all, the Jawbone on Main Street continues to play a significant role in the White Sulphur Springs community. Hosting events like the Day of the Dead Cocktail Party offers residents and visitors an opportunity to engage in cultural celebrations while enjoying a unique dining experience. The upcoming event on November 2nd promises to be a memorable evening filled with food, drinks, and community spirit. As the Jawbone looks forward to another successful season, its commitment to blending tradition with innovation ensures it remains a beloved local establishment.
