Summer Reading Success
The Role of Meagher County City Library's Summer Program
The Meagher County City Library plays a vital role in the education of both adults and young individuals in the region. From adult education classes to programs targeted toward the younger generation, the library stays busy throughout the entire year. Specifically, during the summer, the Meagher County City Library acts as a safe space for many county youth, bringing both entertainment and education during the vacation from school. The Meagher County City Library provides weekly storytimes nearly every Wednesday during the school year for children of all ages. However, during the summer season, the library transitions to a summer reading program. Sponsored by the Meagher County Friends of the Library, the program is being held from June 12 through July 31 this year, with sessions every Wednesday from 11 AM to 12 PM. Summer reading programs are essential for rural youth for several reasons. Firstly, these programs help combat the "summer slide," which is the loss of academic skills and knowledge over the summer break. In rural areas where access to educational resources may be limited, summer reading programs provide an opportunity for youth to continue learning and improving their literacy skills during the summer months. The Meagher County City Library takes it a step further than preventing academic loss. The library chooses a ‘Kid Librarian’ every week to select their favorite books and showcase them on a designated display. This enhances the excitement of the summertime program and provides an added incentive to read. Additionally, the program also features themed activities with weekly reads to keep children engaged, such as last week’s “Adventures Around the World.” The Meagher County City Library's summer reading program exemplifies a dedicated effort to support the educational growth of children in the community. Through engaging activities and initiatives such as the ‘Kid Librarian,’ the program not only combats the summer slide but also fosters a love of reading. These initiatives highlight the library’s ongoing commitment to enriching the lives of young readers in White Sulphur Springs. Photo via Meagher County City Library Facebook Page.
