Historical Meagher County

The area not only provides scenic landscapes, but the history behind the region is beautiful as well.

As Meagher County is one of only five original territorial counties in Montana, the historical points and places from the county are many and impactful. The region has close to ten historical points of interest and different spots to learn the records of days past. The Castle Museum is located in the heart of White Sulphur Springs. The museum is located in exactly what you’d anticipate: a castle. The building is set up to take visitors through the large house and showcase cars, tools, and other antiques that have lived in Meagher County since their making. The Charles M. Bair Museum is located along MT Highway 294 outside of Martinsdale. This museum that was created in 2011 showcases the late Bair family’s Native American collection, paintings of western style, and other antiquities. The museum is adjacent to what was the Bair’s residence. The Bair family was an influential group of people that are continuing on their legacy long past their lives end. The Bair family continues to make an impact through community grants, scholarships, and their educational museum. Other historic sites include Castletown, the Martinsdale Bank, Camp Logan, the old Railroad Depot, and the Lennep Trinity Lutheran Church. History continues to be made in the Meagher region with growing businesses like Red Ants Pants Western Wear. The Meagher County Chamber of Commerce lists information on these sites on their website. The website also lists several ‘historic points of interest.’ These are places such as: Copperoplois, old houses, and Carrol Trail. In driving around the area, visitors can also see historical buildings still be used by local generational ranchers and farmers. In addition, the Barn Quilt Trail has many scenic and historical spots around all of Meagher County.
