Showdown Montana is kicking off the new year with a focus on safety and accessibility, thanks to a generous partnership with Benefis Health System. On Saturday, January 4, the first 100 visitors to Showdown will receive a free lift ticket courtesy of Benefis, and the Benefis Helena Trauma Team will distribute free ski helmets and fittings for all ages.

The helmet giveaway, part of Benefis’s Trauma Injury Prevention Program, will be held on the third floor of the lodge from 9:00 a.m. to noon. To ensure proper protection, helmets must be fitted on-site with the assistance of Benefis team members. Both children’s and adult sizes will be available, and attendees must be present to receive their helmet.

The Importance of Helmet Use in Skiing and Snowboarding

The giveaway comes at a critical time, as helmet use is increasingly recognized as a lifesaving measure in snow sports. According to a study published in the Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery, helmet use reduces the risk of head injuries by 60% and the risk of fatal head injuries by 40%. Despite these statistics, the National Ski Areas Association reports that while 85% of skiers and snowboarders now wear helmets, some still forgo this safety measure.


Benefis’s efforts to provide free helmets aim to bridge this gap, ensuring that all skiers, regardless of financial circumstances, can enjoy a safer day on the slopes.

The helmet and lift ticket giveaway is just one of many events happening at Showdown on January 4. The Youth Ski League and Showdown Shredders programs also begin that day, offering lessons for skiers and snowboarders aged 5–15, regardless of ability level. These programs, which run through February, provide an opportunity for young athletes to build their skills and confidence in a fun, supportive environment.

With safety, education, and community at the forefront, Showdown Montana continues to foster an inclusive atmosphere for all. Skiers and snowboarders are encouraged to mark their calendars and join the festivities for a day of learning, enjoyment, and safer slopes.
