Fire Risk Reduction
Meagher County to Enter Stage 1 Fire Restrictions Following County Commissioners' Vote
In response to the increasing fire danger and dry conditions, Meagher County Commissioners have voted to implement Stage 1 Fire Restrictions county-wide. The decision, made during a recent meeting, aims to reduce the risk of wildfires and protect the community and natural resources. The restrictions will take effect at 8 a.m.on July 17, 2024. Stage 1 Fire Restrictions are designed to limit activities that are likely to cause wildfires. Under these restrictions, the following activities are prohibited: 1. Building, maintaining, attending, or using any outdoor fire, including but not limited to campfires, warming fires, charcoal grill fires, fused explosives, and fireworks. 2. Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site, or while stationary in an area that is barren or cleared of all flammable materials. 3. Engaging in any other activity that poses a significant risk of starting a fire, including welding or using a cutting torch. The decision to implement Stage 1 Fire Restrictions comes after a significant increase in temperatures and a lack of substantial rainfall, leading to extremely dry conditions across the county. The restrictions aim to prevent human-caused wildfires, which can quickly spread and cause extensive damage to property, wildlife habitats, and natural resources. With smoke still billowing in from the nearby Horse Gulch Fire in Lewis and Clark County, the decision to enforce Stage 1 Fire Restrictions comes as a move to prevent a similar tragedy within Meagher County bounds. The Horse Gulch Fire began on July 9 and is still active as of today, July 16, at approximately 10% contained. The fire has demolished around 13,300 acres and has forced several evacuation orders to be placed by the Lewis and Clark Sheriff’s Office. Although Meagher County has not experienced fires of the magnitude of the Horse Gulch Fire this summer season, the county commissioners are committed to maintaining this fortunate status. By diligently adhering to the implemented fire restrictions and staying informed about the local weather conditions, residents and visitors can play a crucial role in preventing such devastating events. Remaining vigilant and proactive in efforts to minimize fire risks is essential. This collective responsibility helps protect lives and property, as well as preserves the natural beauty and ecological health of the region.
