2024 Meagher County 4-H Fair
Highlights of the upcoming 4-H Fair in Meagher County.
4-H is a youth development organization dedicated to empowering young individuals with lifelong leadership skills. Through hands-on learning experiences in diverse areas such as agriculture, STEM, healthy living, stewardship, and civic engagement, 4-H helps youth develop essential life skills and become active, contributing members of their community. The opprotunity to display such skills is most apparent at the annual 4-H Fair, where the members showcase their individualized projects. The 4-H Fair, eagerly anticipated by many 4-H members, stands as the most significant event of the year for members of the local organization. This week-long celebration provides a platform for members to present their dedicated efforts to the community. For beef market members, preparations began as early as January, when their steer calves had to be in possession. Meanwhile, other members start planning their projects as early as October. For the 2024 Meagher County Fair, there are 295 entries by 51 exhibitors. The fair week commences on July 15th, with all exhibitors participating in interview judging, whether they are showcasing livestock or indoor projects. This process allows them to discuss the challenges and successes encountered throughout the year, and to elaborate on their goals and the steps taken to achieve them. Indoor projects span a diverse range, including welding, woodworking, baking, cake decorating, food preservation, leatherwork, sewing, arts and crafts, leadership, cowboy poetry, and veterinary sciences. Some of these projects will be available for purchase in live and silent auctions. On July 16th, the horse show will take place at 9 PM at the Meagher County Rodeo Arena, featuring nine members competing in various categories such as showmanship, western horsemanship, reining, bareback, trail, and ranch horse. The livestock show begins on July 18th at 8:15 AM with the swine show, followed by other species. The lineup includes 12 beef, 6 lambs, 24 swine, and 1 goat for market projects. These animals will be available in the live auction, provided they meet the minimum weight requirements set by the 4-H Council. Additionally, there are two beef breeding projects, one swine breeding project, and one goat breeding project. The 4-H Sale on July 18th will commence with a buyer's social at 5 PM. During this social, buyers can enjoy a catered pork loin meal and engage with 4-H members to learn more about their projects. The live auction will begin at 6 PM and will continue until all projects are sold. Community members are encouraged to attend the sale to support the 4-H members. For those unable to attend but interested in supporting Meagher County 4-H, sponsorship opportunities are available to help offset the costs of the local Fair.
